Tungsten is a strategic metal that has found an irreplaceable position in engineering and industrial applications due to its unique combination of properties. The consumption and use of this metal became more widespread with the advent of tungsten heavy alloys, which are actually two-component metal-metal composites (tungsten particles+binder). Tungsten heavy alloys date back 90 years. The application areas of heavy alloys range from critical industries such as defense and ordnance, aerospace, shipbuilding, racing cars, energy, radiation and nuclear medicine, to other industries such as computers, plastic injection and die casting, machine tools, watchmaking, and sporting goods. Because of the very high melting point of tungsten, powder-based techniques are used to manufacture these parts. The most common industrial manufacturing process is conventional powder metallurgy (press-and-sinter), followed by powder injection molding. Commercial heavy alloys of the W–Ni–Cu, W–Ni–Fe, and W–Ni–Co systems usually liquid-phase sinter at temperatures of about 1500 °C. The W–Ni–Fe system is the most widely used one. Due to their significance from both scientific and technological perspectives, heavy alloys have attracted considerable attention over the years. In the present article, an attempt has been made to introduce tungsten metal and tungsten heavy alloys, to give a brief history of the development of commercial heavy alloys, and to provide an overview of the industrial applications and manufacturing processes of this class of advanced materials.
