Effects of loading rate and crack propagation direction on interlaminar fracture toughness in polymer matrix composites: An analytical and experimental study

Abstract

In this research, the effects of crack propagation and load speed in the first failure mode on failure toughness were studied analytically and experimentally. In the first mode, the crack opening of the fiber layout was examined in two different modes and the release of the crack was tested in parallel and perpendicular to the fibers direction. To perform three-point bending tests, the sample tests were designed and fabricated according to the standard. The purpose of the loading test is to measure the toughness of the failure in different directions of release and crack growth relative to the fiber angles. In addition, a set of standard samples examined a double-edged gearhead by applying angle the loading change and the rate of speed were evaluated by changing the loading angle relative to the fixture line. The percentage changes in interlaminar fracture toughness in DCB, transverse and longitudinal TPB tests are 5.67%, 6.5% and 3.93%, respectively. These changes indicate that the difference between fracture toughness in the crack growth region for DCB test specimens is smaller than that for TPB specimens due to the thickness of the specimens. The results show that interlaminar failure toughness is much greater when the crack grows parallel to the fibers than when the crack grows perpendicular to the fibers. Then, the physical reasons for these experimental results discussed.
